To split a window, click the striped part at the corner of the window and drag.

To merge windows, you click the striped part and drag the other way.

But remember that you can't merge more than two windows at a time.

You can change the windows types by selecting the drop-down in the lower-left corner.

You can create whole new window by holding down shift and dragging from that striped corner.

Now only that, but you can customize that new window all you want!

You can get rid of the header at the bottom of a window by selecting the top of it and dragging down.

You can change to different layouts by selecting them from the menu at the top. Although, when you render from inside blender, it'll create a "temp" layout. You can make blender render from a new window in the render options if you want

You can also create your own layouts by selecting the + icon next to that menu.

You can customize that layout and switch through them all you want!
